Review on Dusty Groove & Video for DEXTER JOHNSON album: Seminal sounds from Senegalese saxophonist Dexter Johnson – a rare late 60s concert that captures him at the height of his powers – soloing brilliantly over the Latin grooves of Super Star De Dakar! The group was one of the best in Dakar to take on elements of Cuban music – and they work here in a style thats often spare, and highly percussive – to infuse the songs with complex rhythms that really seem to spur Dexter into some mighty soulful solos! Some passages have Johnson hitting these blue notes at the start, then getting much more expressive on his solos – really coming into the limelight after the singers deliver the initial lyrics of the tunes. The Cuban influence is plenty apparent in the titles of the songs – which include Para Que Bueno, Mayeya, Soy Jijo Del Sibony, Caminho De Sao Tome, Borinquen Tropical, and El Corazon.
