Revision is one of the exquisite pleasures of writing. ~ Bernard Malamud I agree with Bernard. Ive been doing something a little different with the book Im currently writing. Usually I hammer out a first draft as fast as I can. If I dont know something, I skip over it. If a scene isnt working, I come back to it ...later. I write out of order. The end result is a big convoluted mess that I have to go back and fix. Theres nothing wrong with that. First drafts are notoriously crappy, and since you cant edit a blank page you need to focus on getting the story down. But Im finding that my current method is leaving me with a lot less crap and I have a draft thats much tighter, and will need less fixing, than my usual first draft effort. Because I was sending a synopsis and the first ninety pages of this book to my agent, I had to make those pages shine as bright as I could. Theyre still first draft pages, meaning that things can and will change over the course of reaching the end of this draft. But this time around I forced myself to tackle the things that werent coming easily or quickly. I revised one chapter at a time until it worked and I was happy with it. I used to think I hated writing synopses, but Im starting to realize that maybe I dont. Ive now written two full synopses and am writing one more. The first synopsis I wrote is proving to be a valuable road map as I draft this book. That doesnt mean the synopsis hasnt changed slightly, because it has, but thats to be expected anytime youre writing. Thats part of the fun of creating a story. This is also the fastest Ive written a book (Im at 50K so Ive passed the halfway point. I started writing this book on October 4th). When Im done with the fist draft Ill have much less work to do when I start the second. Ive been working on a single chapter for five days now. At first it was pretty bad, but now I really like it. Im glad I took the time and kept going over it instead of skipping ahead. Anyway, I just thought Id share in case you were interested in hearing about my writing process. Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you all have a great weekend. :)
