Reviving the sunnah Did you know that the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad is to pray eid at a musalla (outdoor field)? It is recommend that the eid prayers be held in a musalla (outdoor field). The musalla of the Muslims in the Prophets time was to the east of his masjid, according to al Hafiz ibn Hajar it was where al-Baqee (cemetery) is now. See Fathul Baari The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded all the Muslims to attend the eid prayer at the musalla. Abu Said Al Khudri (may Allah have mercy upon him) reported: On the day of al-Fitr and al-Adha, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to go out to the musallah... Al Bukhaari, and others Ibn al-Haajj al-Maaliki (may Allah have mercy upon him) said: The established practice is to hold the two eids at the musallah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: < One prayer in this masjid of mine is better than a thousand prayers in other masjids - except for masjid ul-Haraam.> Al Bukhari Yet despite this great merit, he (peace be upon him) left his masjid and went out to the musalla (on the days of eid). See Al Mudkhal There is one report that the prophet (peace be upon him) once prayed in the eid prayer in the masjid. Despite this narration being weak, the scholars agree that it is permissible to pray in the masjid if there is a valid excuse for abandoning the musalla (such as rain or cold). Holding the eid prayer provides a rare chance for the largest number of Muslims to attend. Furthermore, holding it at a musallah gives a different, festive feeling to the prayer as opposed to the usual indoors prayer.
