Reward Offered for Fire Start Information—The Klamath National Forest and CAL FIRE issued a joint announcement of a $20 000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for starting the Salmon River Complex and Butler Fires. Forks Complex (includes Salmon River Complex and Butler Fire) Rains from a marine front helped fire fighters achieve 90% containment for the Butler Fire as of September 21 2013. This weather event was measured at up to 2” of rain on ridge tops within the fire area. With the Salmon River Complex (the other half of the Forks Complex) at 100% containment both fires are now in monitor and patrol status. The Forks Complex transitioned management back to the local unit on Sunday September 22 2013. The Incident Command Post located at Forks of Salmon has been closed. Inciweb will only be updated periodically to provide an overview and status of the suppression repair work. There will be no more daily updates. Thanks to all of our stakeholders and local communities for your support during these fires. Some fire suppression repair work remains to be completed when weather conditions allow. Most of this work is in the northeast area of the Butler Fire. In addition to ongoing suppression repair monitoring and patrolling of the Forks Complex the next major step is to complete burned area emergency rehabilitation (BAER). This includes mapping fire intensity of soils and vegetation and developing a plan which addresses concerns for community water supplies water quality fisheries and wildlife habitat erosion potential and threats to life and property. Fire intensity mapping for the Salmon River Complex shows that 72% of the land is either unburned or burned at low intensity 22% burned at moderate intensity and 6% burned at a high intensity. “Overall we’re pleased with the minimal damage evident from the fires” stated Joe Blanchard Forest Soil Scientist and BAER Team Leader for the Klamath National Forest. The BAER plan for the Salmon River Complex has been completed and is currently in the contract preparation stage. The Butler Fire BAER planning process has completed the mapping stage and is currently in the assessment stage. Preliminary results indicate fire intensities similar to the Salmon River Complex. The goal is to complete the emergency rehabilitation projects before heavy winter rains begin. Forks Complex Alerts A Klamath National Forest Emergency Closure Order is still in effect around the Butler Fire and Salmon River Complex on the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests. The purpose of this order is public safety. Wildfires create weakened trees that may fall—as well as erosion and slide potential aggravated by rain on soils devoid of vegetation. Conditions for vehicle and foot travel are perilous. Motorists should be alert for fallen rocks and other debris in the roadway. Campfire restrictions have been lifted effective September 21 2013 due to recent rainfall and anticipated wetter cooler weather. Persons who wish to have a campfire need a valid California Permit which is available at local Forest Service offices.
