Rewind retro video of the day... From Montreal, Quebec, Canada, here is Corey Hart with the 1984 single Sunglasses at Night from his debut album First Offense. The song peaked at #24 in Canada and #7 in the US. He was nominated for a Grammy as Best New Artist and 3 Canadian Juno Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Composer of the Year, and Single of the Year, and won for Best Video. A chance meeting with Billy Joel in a New York recording studio got Hart a contract with Aquarius Records in 82. Revolution Recording Studios owner Andy MacPherson hired Gary Tibbs (Adam and the Ants) on bass, Paul Burgess (10cc) on drums, Michael Byron-Hehir (Sad Café) on guitar, and Eric Clapton (Cream, Derek & the Dominos, solo) on resonator guitar. In the video, a dystopian fashion police state exists. Hart sits in a prison cell sans his Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. He is strong-armed by fashion police officers wearing their regulation shades, and Hart is later paraded in front of fashion-craving citizens on his way to a female senior police officer, who releases him. Ray-Ban Wayfarers were created in 1956, with their revolutionary plastic design a hard break against wire-rimmed sunglasses. They were popular in the 50s and 60s, then faded from the fashion limelight. But in 80, the iconic film The Blues Brothers brought them back into prominence. But it wasnt until Tom Cruise danced to Bob Segers Old Time Rock and Roll in his shirt, socks, undies, and Wayfarers in the 83 film Risky Business that sales went through the roof. Musicians wearing the iconic brand include Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Debbie Harry (Blondie), Madonna, and Elvis Costello. Celebrities like Jack Nicholson and Max Headroom wore them as well. Theyve even been namechecked in Don Henleys The Boys of Summer (84) and by author Bret Easton Ellis in his novel Less Than Zero (85). https://youtube/watch?v=X2LTL8KgKv8
