Rewind video of the day... Were continuing with the Dark Rewind motif today. From Sheffield, UK... Rewind introduces the uninitiated to Cabaret Voltaire, one of the first Industrial bands to grace the airwaves and nightclubs on both sides of the Atlantic. Here is the 1984 single Sensoria from their album Micro-Phonies. While never garnering status on the pop charts, it found airplay on MTV and was voted Best Video of the Year by the LA Times in 85. It was later procured by the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Switzerland remained neutral during WWI and received a large influx of refugees, many of whom were artists. Among these was the anarchist philosopher Hugo Ball, who in 1916 wrote the Dada Manifesto. The Manifesto was a political statement on the terrible state of society and his distaste for previous philosophies proclaiming to possess Ultimate Truth. Hugo intentionally chose the word Dada because of its many meanings in various languages. In English, it means father. In French, hobby horse. In German, it may mean good-bye, see you later, or get off my back. In Romanian, yes or I agree. The fact that the word has so many meanings lends itself to absurdity... and that is the essence of the Dada artistic movement. The actual Cabaret Voltaire was a nightclub in Zürich, Switzerland, founded on 2/5/16 by Ball and his companion Emmy Hemmings. It was meant to be a forum for artistic entertainment of all persuasions- fine art, spoken word performances, dance and music. Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Giorgio de Chirico, and Max Ernst were amongst the avant-garde artists invited to portray or perform their works. Their soirées were often just as chaotic, raucous, and brutal as the war raging outside of Switzerland. On at least one occasion, audiences attacked the stage. But like most nightclubs, it had a short history. By 17 the Cabaret Voltaire had become passé and its audience had moved on. The band would take on the name when they formed in 1973 to create Dada-influenced performance art. But their experiments in sound creation and processing, coupled with the advent of Punk Rock, eventually led them to making Pop-infused Industrial, Dance, Techno, Dub, House, and Electronic music. This is one of their best songs. Rewind hopes you enjoy it! https://youtube/watch?v=RkfzXq0tA3c
