Sorry!) Thank you for your concern about the significant expansion of Baltimore City’s youth curfew, which was passed by the City Council and signed by the Mayor and goes into effect two weeks from tomorrow on August 8. As you know, many organizations raised questions and concerns about the proposal and developed an alternate plan. Although we were not able to stop the curfew, the ACLU’s Legal Department is monitoring the City’s implementation of the law. We attended last week’s forum put on by the City, and will be attending next week’s forum, and we understand that many questions remain unanswered. We will again contact the City with some of these key questions in the coming weeks. We are also developing Know Your Rights materials, speaking to youth groups, and asking everyone who has been negatively affected by the curfew to call our Civil Rights Complaint Line at 443-524-2558. We look forward to seeing how our amazing grassroots, activist and organizing partners continue mobilizing to challenge this misguided law. To be sure you have the information you need, we have attached the following documents: • The ACLU’s May 12 letter to the Mayor and City Council in opposition of the curfew, • A one-page summary of our opposition, and • The detailed alternate plan endorsed by 20 youth-serving and youth-supporting organizations. We will continue to post key updates to our website, at aclu-md.org/ We hope that you will consider attending the community meeting next week (Tue, July 29 at 7:00p, at the University of Baltimore Law Center Moot Court, 1401 N Charles St) and asking any questions you have about the curfew. We also hope that, going forward, you will help us by being the eyes and ears on the ground. Thanks, again, for standing up for the rights of young people and their parents!
