Rhone & Alsace 12th November Our next tasting will be on the wines from France, mainly Alsace and Rhone. We shall look at 2 areas that specialise in their regional wines. Alsace produce great gentle aromatic wines. The region is the only one allowed to display the grape variety as their main feature rather than region. on the front label. The main grape varieties used are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Riesling. They are also very deceptive in that they can appear as simple easy drinking wines, but they are more than capable of partnering and matching many dishes from Alsace to Asia. Whilst on the subject of wines that can accompany slightly spicy food we have to show a quality Viognier from S.W. France, near Narbonne. 2010 was a fine vintage especially in thye Rhone and Languedoc. All the experts agree Rhône 2010 is one of the finest vintages for 40 years, Decanter’s expert John Livingstone-Learmonth Jancis Robinson says “Overall, however, the northern Rhône 2010s are delightful - ripe but fresh and silky” Rhone wines especially from the south are based on Grenache with support from Syrah and occasionally a splash of Mourvedre. Paul Boutinot has always believed that the Rhone offers incredible value for money and offers great drinking wines. Chateaneuf-du-pape has always been famous but there are many pretty little villages that also make great wines at a shadow of Chateaneuf. We will show a generic Cotes du Rhone, pluswines from the villages of Cairanne and Seguret. These wines are in demand and this vintage will soon be exhausted. So stock up now. We also taste a wine, Dignite, from Languedoc a pure Syrah made by Eric Monnin that is extremely good.
