Rice Farmers Crying This is terribly sad. Most of them are perpetually poor. They get up at about four in the morning and work until the sun goes down. You see them in the rice paddies in scorching weather, high humidity, hunched under their large hats, covered in clothes, working in the mud and water. And when it is all over, they live crop to crop, with little money to spare. About four million unairconditioned households in Thailand depend on the toil of rice farming, and now perhaps half of them have been ripped off by the Thaksin government who took their rice in exchange for a piece of paper and a promise of a high price -- which was still not much for the work -- and has not paid them. The farmers went from poor to broke. This is part of why people are demanding reform. Their tears will ripple in the rice paddies as they are now harvesting the first crop of the year. Their prospects are bleak.
