Richard Giragosian, director of the Regional Studies Center in Yerevan, explains “Armenia’s Search for Independence” in Current History’s October issue on Russia and Eurasia. He notes that “statehood and independence have never been easy for Armenia”--and lately they have been complicated further by a frozen conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh and fraught reengagement with Turkey. But overdependence on Russia remains the biggest problem. Giragosian says: “As the strategic partnership with Moscow has become steadily more one-sided, Yerevan has finally begun to see that--while close relations with Russia are essential over the long term--the imperative now is to expand its room for maneuver by means of a more determined embrace of the West.” Our October 2014 issue is available in print, for Kindle on Amazon, and on our website, currenthistory.
