Richard Sherman - my quick thoughts. Immediately after seeing his outburst after yesterdays game I turned to Gary Gardner and said, angry black man. After years of watching television and movies Ive come to realize all to often that black men are often used as forms of minstrel entertainment (sports and music being the primary vehicles), warrior types, or angry black men. For instance, Gary and I have been watching the Stargate series over the last year and a half and in every season there is the stereotypical angry black man. Tealc - warrior Jaffa of Stargate SG1, Ronin Dex - military fighter from Stargate Atlantis, and Lt. Greere - angry and defiant military attack dog of Stargate Universe. But of course there are countless other examples in film and real life to murder the cliche. Denzel Washington not withstanding. His outburst last night was confusing and embarrassing to me. If he was having an argument with another player on the field we surely could care less. I didnt find his outburst (I dont know his player history) appropriate. He just won a game and he responds in anger? Ok...well, to me, his outburst only makes sense if he was having an argument with another player who doubted his abilities and he wanted to gloat about it. Thats the only context, to me, that would give his outburst any reasonable appropriateness. Other than that, Im clueless.
