Richard Sherman: Other teams break rules more than Seahawks Posted on August 27, 2014 | By Stephen Cohen On the eve of the Seattle Seahawks final preseason game of 2014, All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman weighed in on the so-called “Legion of Boom” rules. So it’s just funny to watch it. The same thing that makes you laugh makes you cry. So it makes us laugh.” In the offseason, the NFL instructed its officials to make illegal contact downfield between receivers and defenders — particularly holding — a point of emphasis in the preseason, with the Hawks’ physical secondary the presumed impetus for the change. That emphasis has made a noticeable difference, with NOLA’s Jeff Duncan pointing out that there have been twice as many penalties called per game this preseason as the 2013 regular season. In fact, nearly as many illegal contact penalties were called in the first week of the preseason (27) as the entire 2013 regular season (37), according to ESPN’s John Clayton. But a surprisingly low number of those have come against the supposed instigators of the emphasis, with the Seahawks called for just three illegal contact penalties, two defensive pass interference calls and zero defensive holding infractions in three preseason matchups. And according to Sherman, that’s not a result of any kind of concerted effort by the defending champs. “We’ve been getting a lot of praise this preseason for not having any holding penalties,” he wrote. “I’m not sure why, we didn’t adjust anything. We’ve been playing the game the right way. We continue to play it the right way.” Some other quick hits from the post: Sherman highlighted the play of cornerback Phillip Adams, who’s competing with Jeremy Lane for Walter Thurmond’s vacated nickel spot: “He’s looking smooth. He’s good with his technique. He understands the defense. He understands where he’s supposed to be.” He praised the Hawks’ underappreciated receivers: “I think our receiving corps has always been underrated and they’ve always shown up in big games when we needed big plays. They’re always there to deliver them. Whether it’s Doug, Kearse, Percy, whoever it may be, whoever we need to make a big play, makes it.” Sherman also pointed out the play of quarterback Russell Wilson, who’s had an outstanding preseason: “He’s going through his progressions. He’s making the right read and he’s minimizing negative plays as he calls it. When he doesn’t have anything, he’ll run for three, four yards and that’s a big deal.” Visit seattlepi for more Seattle Seahawks news.
