During this time of year, Sheriff Leon Lott asks you to stay alert to your surroundings and follow these holiday safety tips for your protection: Personal Protection: • Don’t think that that it can’t happen to you. • Always be aware of your surroundings, who’s in front of you and who’s behind you. Don’t get distracted. • Walk purposefully, stand tall, and make eye contact with people around you. • Stay Alert! • Make yourself a “tough target.” • Trust your instincts! If you feel uncomfortable in a situation, leave! • Don’t shop alone • If being followed or stalked, call 911 or drive directly to a police station. If Youre Attacked • Stay as calm as possible and evaluate your options and resources. • Give them what they want – don’t risk severe injury or death. • Keep assessing the situation as it is happening – you many need to look at options that may include negotiating, stalling for time, distracting the assailant and fleeing to a safe place, verbal assertiveness, screaming, and physical resistance. Sheriff Leon Lott wants you to have the tools you need to protect yourself and your family. The Sheriff is asking you to do your part to reduce crime this holiday season and always; please practice crime prevention everyday.
