Richmond Council #580 Knighst of Columbus Newsletter. From the Grand Knight . . . Brother Knights: We begin the year with the news that Richmond Council #580 has been awarded the Columbian Award by the Supreme Council for this past fraternal year. This award is for the Council having activities in the following categories that include: Church, Community Council, Family, Youth and Culture of Life. I would like to thank all the members and groups who helped the council achieve this award. “Thank You.” Our goal this year is to do as well or better with your help and support. Let’s welcome our newest member Kirk Thornburg. He took his degree work at the Brookville Council. Kirk and his family are members at St. Andrew’s. Welcome Kirk! The council is looking for new members. This year the goal is “One member, per month.” If you know someone who is 18 years old and a practicing Catholic, ask them to join us and be a member of the largest Catholic men’s organization. (See the back page for recruiting information. Applications can be obtained from Donnie Miller or Fred Campbell.) In October we will be doing the “Food for Families” program again this year. We will be asking all members and parishners to join us in donating non-perishable or can food items. There will be boxes in the back of each of the churches on October 26-27. All of the items collected will be donated to one of the local food pantries. Last year all of the collected items were used to help fill 200 food baskets at Thanksgiving. Any questions or want a pickup, contact Chairman Fred Campbell, 962-6902. Also in October and November we will be heading up the St. Vincent de Paul coat drive. Please donate new or gently used coats, sweaters, sweatshirts or winter clothing for all age groups that will be donated to those in need. There will be boxes in back of each church for this. Watch the church bulletin for more information or contact Logan Patterson. A big “Thank You” to all the Knights that help with the Tri-parish Picnic. It was good to see so many members participating. Information about upcoming events will be posted on our Facebook page, the Richmond Catholic Community website and your weekly church bulletin. If you want to receive monthly emails with the latest information, furnish Financial Secretary Fred Campbell with your email address. Sent it to fcampbell580@msn If you have any suggestions for an event or activity please contact me, Donnie Miller. Also I want to “Thank” this year’s officers for their service. Below is an illustration of just how little time it takes to be an active member of the Order. Even with this minimal commitment he can be an important part of his council and reap the benefits membership offers to him and his family. When talking to a prospect about joining our Order, try breaking down the time commitment in this way: Six hours a year on a council sponsored Church, community, council, family, pro-life or youth project of his choosing. Four hours a year attending two council meetings (if well-run and interesting, he might even come back for a third). Four hours a year enjoying (with his entire family) a council social function such as a dinner, dance, picnic, etc. Four hours a year volunteering at the council’s annual drive for people with intellectual disabilities, the Knights of Columbus New International Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest, K of C Soccer Challenge, Substance Abuse Awareness Poster Contest or similar event. Four hours a year attending, with his family, two corporate Communions or council prayer services at his parish. One hour a year reading the council bulletin, council Web site and the Supreme Council Web site. One hour a year visiting with a Knights of Columbus Field Agent to ensure that his family is protected now and in the years to come. That’s only 24 hours a year, which practically any man can fit into his schedule. When you present the time commitment of joining the Order in this way, it doesn’t seem very intimidating at all. Once a man becomes a member and sees how rewarding being a Knight is, he’ll want to dedicate more of his time to the Order. There are 8,760 hours in a year. By giving the Knights of Columbus 24 of those hours a man can be a better Catholic, father, husband and person. Think of the difference the Knights of Columbus can make in our communities if these men join us. We only have to let each qualified prospect know that he already has the time — only 24 hours — to join and make a difference in his Church and community. Vivat Jesus, Grand Knight Donnie Miller
