Rick Meli died last night. He was the father of my cousin Quintin Meli and the former husband of my aunt Rhonda Kindred Meli Beck. He, in an all-too familiar story for me and mine, had fought a long battle with cancer. Rick was a genuinely nice guy. He was quiet but funny and assuredly enormously proud of his son. He took me to my first American League baseball game (in the 80s, White Sox vs. As during the Bash Bros. era) and was knowledgeable on a number of subjects I enjoyed. When my grandmother Joyce died a few years ago, Rick made the multi-hour journey to her visitation and funeral despite technically no longer being related to the rest of the family. That alone says volumes about what a good guy he was. At the time, I found him much the same as hed always been: kind, witty, and full of nice things to say about my boys. My heart goes out to Quintin and Rhonda and everyone else that knew him.
