Rickie Fowler believes the set-up of the United States Ryder Cup - TopicsExpress

Rickie Fowler believes the set-up of the United States Ryder Cup team is well suited to winning back the title at Gleneagles. The 25-year-old will make his second Ryder Cup appearance this weekend, having debuted at Celtic Manor in 2010 before missing the States heartbreaking defeat at Medinah. Seven of the 12 players in Tom Watsons team were involved last time out as Europe fought back from 10-6 down on the final day to clinch victory. With rookies Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker making up the remainder of the team alongside Hunter Mahan and Fowler, the world number 10 is confident in the balance between youth and experience. Weve been on the wrong side of the momentum. So with Europe winning quite a bit more than we have, its been easier for them, Fowler said on Wednesday. I feel like theyve come together and theyre enjoying the ride of that momentum. I think its been tough for some of the guys that have been a part of the losing Ryder Cup teams. Youve got some guys coming in that havent played as many, some guys that are new to the Ryder Cup team. And you know, they havent seen the bad side of the Ryder Cup. Weve got a team thats very refreshed and new. Weve got a couple guys that have played quite a few. But they are motivated to jump on and get this thing turned around. I know wed love to take the cup back home. With Fowler and Mahan making their return to the competition, the latter says he will likely seek advice from experienced team-mates such as Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. However, while well aware of the benefits associated with experience, Fowler also feels the younger members of Watsons team can have a significant say in deciding the winners. I think it can go both ways. I think leading up to the event, we can look up to Phil and Furyk, guys that have played quite a few Ryder Cups now, as well as our captain and vice-captains, he added. I think we can look to them as far as insight goes and advice and getting ready for the matches. Once the week is going, theres a chance that, yeah, if the young guys play well, we can help build some momentum and build some confidence for the team and help some of the older guys, Furyk and Phil, get them fired up a little bit more. There is the chance the young guys could fire the team up a bit and carry them through the week, but wont know until we get going. But Phil has definitely been great to have in the team room. Hes not afraid to speak up and talk to different guys and try and help out in any way he can.
