Ride on! Rough-shod if need be, smooth-shod if that will do, but ride on! Ride on over all obstacles, and win the race! – Charles Dickens About Charles Dickens Charles Dickens, the Victorian-era novelist best known for A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations, is considered a giant of English literature. He was born in 1812 in Portsmouth. After an idyllic childhood, his father was thrown in debtors prison; Dickens had to labor in a factory at age 12. He achieved fame as a writer in his early 20s and was known for his florid style, his sharp characterizations, and his exposés of the plight of the poor. He died in 1870.
