Riding Free was a song that took me a total of two days to write. - TopicsExpress

Riding Free was a song that took me a total of two days to write. I have been attending Rodeos ever since I was a wee little lad, so it was just bound to write one of these some day. It was after reading all these articles about these up and coming American Indian Rodeo riders, that I got the idea that I have never heard a song about them. I mean there are tons of Rodeo songs, but never have I ever heard of one dedicated to the Native Rodeo riders. So I sat down in my rehearsal space and I instantly hit the suspended intro chord. I could already hear the entire song in my head, so I just kept playing along with what I was hearing. The intro about waking before the sun rises, saying her prayers, and racing the sun is a direct reference to what many American Indian Tribes do all around North America. This intro was very important to me to establish the tone of the song. The first verse is about a Barrel racer and the second is about a bull rider. The end verse is about the Bronc riders, Steer wrestlers, and the ropers. I tried my best to make this tune represent those who do this for a living. I hope its effective, its one of my favorite songs to play live. Pete Sands,
