Rigell Advocates For Congress To Stay In Session, Finish Appropriations Work Only 15 Legislative Days Before Deadline, 8 Spending Bills Remain Washington, DC – Today Congressman Scott Rigell (VA-2) again called on leadership to keep the House in session through August to finish its appropriations work. By the end of this week, the House will have only passed 4 of 12 appropriations bills. Just 15 legislative days remain before the September 30, 2013 deadline, at which point a Continuing Resolution (CR) would be required to fund the government at current funding levels. Speaking from the House floor, Rigell said: “When an organization is facing profound challenges, you do what you must to do to set it on a better course. It may be House tradition to break (for August), but I submit that it’s not wise.” Rigell noted that Republicans have succeeded in passing sound legislation to create jobs, but need to adjust the summer legislative calendar to address the priorities of the nation. “A CR is wholly inadequate as a financial vehicle to fund this government,” Rigell said. “It has serious, adverse consequences. It damages our economy and job creation. It damages our military in a very real way; ultimately, it hurts hardworking American families. "Every time we pass a Continuing Resolution our military reels with uncertainty. We have a deep obligation to the young men and women around the world who are keeping this country safe, to use every dollar wisely to ensure that we get the very best equipment and support to each of them. That’s why I feel so strongly about this issue and it burdens me when we fail the American people in this respect.”
