Right, Ive thought about it long and hard and have had numerous No voters seeking to persuade me otherwise. But I am about to vote Yes. Independence is clearly not without its risks but at least it gives us the opportunity become citizens of a modern European democracy. That, to me, is preferable to remaining the subject of a sclerotic, corroded and corrupt post-imperial Westminster establishment that:- cares little for the welfare of its people; is increasingly captured by big business and the City of London; which has no truck with transparency; and which (after shockingly inadequate economic stewardship in recent years and given the £1.4 trillion national debt), may anyway be on the brink of collapse. And just in case youre worried that, if Scotland becomes independent, it will somehow be closing itself off from the world, will be overrun by fascists or become an economic basket case, those things are not going to happen. Scotland is a wealthy country, with the 12th highest GDP per capita out of more than 200 counties in the world. It is quite capable of looking afters its own affairs in a civilised way. It is a genuinely outward-looking country. And I believe that relations with our friends in England, and indeed in other countries, might even improve as a consequence of independence. For a balanced evaluation of the challenges and opportunities that an independent Scotland will face, Open Democracys Oliver Huitson does a far better job I ever could. (see Olivers article below).
