Right, the uptake looks great, I think we have 65 students in the group, and it looks like 62 are in. Hopefully the others will join soon too. For tomorrows class, well well start off with a look at how the media functions under different political systems. That doesnt just mean media under a totalitarian form of government versus media under a democracy, but also within the numerous shades of democracy. For this, Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics, a 2004 book by Hallin and Mancini was hailed as a great breakthrough, insofar as the model it provides for comparing media systems within democracies is concerned. Its obviously too much to ask now to go through the book, if indeed it is available in the first place, but their publishers have provided a great breakdown of the key concepts contained within the book on their Wikipedia page I find. Dont worry, I know they say to be careful what you read on Wikipedia - a piece of advice that should apply to whatever you might read anywhere really - but Ive run this through the mill and it looks safe to absorb. It would help to have a look at this if you can guys, for tomorrows class. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparing_Media_Systems
