Righteous? Luke 18:9 “And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:” A Christian is a sinner saved by grace. “There are no righteous people.” Jesus died on the cross that all might have the opportunity for eternal life. In the passage in Luke 18:9-14 Jesus spoke a parable about two people, one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee was self-righteous. He felt his moral quality would guarantee him a place in heaven. He was fatally wrong! In fact the Bible says he was not justified at all. One is not justified by self-opinion; one is only justified by the blood of Christ and the edict of the Father. The publican was humble and truthful before God. He said, “God be merciful to me a sinner.” He confessed his sin and trusted God for salvation realizing that it is only by God’s mercy and grace are we justified. God saved him. The Christian life is one of humility and repentance. It comes when a person realizes his sinful state, humbles himself, and accepts the Lord as his Saviour. Rather than lifting ourselves up and thinking we are better than anyone else, we ought to humble ourselves and simply thank God He cared enough to send His Son to die for us so that we do not spend eternity in hell. Thank God for His mercy and grace. Pastor Wilson 1-19-2015
