Rightie ho. Lets get this tour review off to a start. There has been a lot of banter recently regarding Afros on South Beach as it is affectionately known. Having tried it briefly at an Umhlanga market about 6 months ago and remembering the lingering taste, we ventured down for an early lunch to a windy DBN beachfront. First sight impressions: Quaint and simple. It doesnt need to be any more. Its fast food remember. Lets leave the fancy shmancy to the Harveys, et al. Sidle up to the counter and place your order with the lovely Shameda and her team. They never stop smiling. When it comes to service, as a restauranteur, you have already won half the battle with a smile that is real and genuine. Its the small things that count for me. The food: Two chicken burgers and tjips (1 x hot peri peri and 1 x cool lemon) were ordered washed down with a green mamba and an Americano for the vrou. It takes about 10-15 minutes but it arrived with a flourish. Fresh Portuguese roll, with lettuce, tomato, mayo and of course the chicken prepared in strips and smothered in their respective sauces. For those of you who worry that the hot peri peri is like Nandos think again. It is mild, flavourful, with a hint of chilli. It is just right, to allow infusion into the succulent breast of chicken that it envelopes. The chips were a bit chewy but my bad for nor asking for freshly oiled ones. They were tasty with a bit of crushed salt sprinkled liberally over the top. Still hot and still damn tasty. Just to my liking. Overall: 9/10 Guys lets be realistic. In the chicken takeaway stakes in Durban, Afros stands out head and shoulders above the commercialised slop that we are dished up from KFC, Nandos, Chicken Licken and the like. Its natural, and it is flavoursome. Dont get there late on a busy day and get upset that they have run out. If they have, then try again another time. Its not their fault. At the moment its a novelty and one that I hope grows successfully and holds the essence of what they are about. They will expand and I hope they do it slowly. Too many good ideas have exploded and lost what they are all about. Would I invest in Afros? If its to help the futures of employees like Shameda, etc, I wouldnt hesitate. They are passionate and that for me says it all.
