Righting A Wrong Occasionally you’ll hear about a robber guiltily returning stolen merchandise. But settling accounts 60 years after the fact? A recent news report notes the experience of one elderly man who confessed to stealing from a Seattle department store decades ago. He paid the cash back with interest in a hand-delivered envelope. His note read: “During the late forties I stole some money from the cash register in the amount of $20-$30. I want to pay you back this money in the amount of $100 to put in your theft account.” Customers found the gesture awesome and heartwarming. The store manager thinks the man’s “conscience must have been bothering him for the past 60 years.” Although security cameras caught the man dropping off his envelope, store personnel said they didn’t recognize him and weren’t inclined to pursue the matter. They planned to contribute the money to a fund for needy families. It is possible to make amends long after the fact. If they repent with all their heart and soul…forgive Your people. (1 Kings 8: 48-50) God, help us atone when we’re in the wrong.
