Adjectives may also go after be (is, am, are, was, and were) and copular verbs like become, seem, look, feel etc… Examples: - I feel happily. (Wrong) => I feel happy. (Correct) - She seemed excitedly. (Wrong) =>She seemed excited. (Correct) Adverbs: Adverbs are words used to modify verbs. They usually express the manner in which something is done. Adverbs are also used to modify adjectives and other adverbs, it usually goes before it. Examples: -I am extremely happy in my new job. -Shes in hospital with a seriously injured neck. -Its incredibly easy to make a mistake when knitting. -The girl climbed dangerously high up the tree. -Because of the thick fog I drove extremely carefully. They are also used after certain verbs (e.g. be, become, seem, look, taste, smell, etc.) the adjective, not the adverb, is used: Examples: -She doesnt seem happy today. -Dont be stupid! -This meat tastes bad. -Those flowers smell strange. “Enough” is an exception to this rule which is placed after the adjective or adverb that it modifies. Example: I got up quite early, but not early enough to eat a good breakfast. Conclusion: Adjective or adverb?... In English most (but not all) adverbs have a different form (spelling) than their corresponding adjective. It is important, therefore, that we know whether we need an adjective or an adverb in the sentences you want to say or write.
