Ripunjoy Talukdar Spondan Bora Shamim Hussain Saurav Das Ambrosia Santis Shivajee Biswanath Sanket Nayak - TRUE DETECTIVE !! True masterpiece !! 8 mind-blowing episodes and 450 mind-boggling minutes of stellar story telling. I have seldom felt sadder at the end of any film or TV series, and because of the anthology format of the series, I know Rust and Martys story is over. And, boy do I want them to keep going !! But now that its over, I decided to review the series. No spoilers friends, I just wouldnt want to spoil the hard work of Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Fukunaga by divulging important plot points to its future audience. I will provide the basic premise though, specially for people who havent started watching it yet. Its a Southern Gothic series, based on the search for a serial killer of women and children by two detectives, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, with diametrically different personalities. However, though the series depends a lot on the ultimate unmasking and capture of the concerned killer, it deals more with the troubled lives of the two detectives, brilliantly portrayed by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and the eerie topography of Louisiana, where the story takes place. In the beginning of the series, we learn about Rust and Martys partnership at the Louisiana State Police Dept, events that brought them together and little snippets from their personal lives. We hear their own accounts of the incidents, as told in the present time to two other detectives. And the series followed this mode of story-telling for all but 2 of its episodes. Matthew and Woodys brilliance immediately pulled us into their troubled worlds. The lulling pace of the narrative made sure that we took in every single detail put together by the makers. As the episodes went by, we got deeper into the intricacies of their case, and even deeper into the lives of Rust and Marty. Rusts emptiness and cynicism and Martys suffocation, despite the presence of an apparently happy family. The initial episodes also tease on an imminent fight between the two protagonists, which plays a huge role in the ultimate development of their investigative, as well as personal friendship. Michelle Monaghan as Maggie Hart, Martys wife, provided brilliant support to the leads. And she is an important tool for Fukunaga in how he pans out the entire series. What started as a suspense story gets over taken by the emotional bonding of its characters. Maggie plays a huge role in that. I have seldom seen such brilliant character development on either film or TV. Both Rust and Marty had become parts of my lives !! True Detective became noteworthy for its cinematography as well. Adam Arkapaw is a serious talent to look out for. Every episode had such innovative shots, that I had to re-plan my viewing schedule. I would watch it once just to take note of the brilliant camera work and then again, to get deeper into the characters lives. The series commanded close attention, and I was more than happy to provide that. Check out the extended climax of the 4th Episode to see how brilliant the cinematography is in the series. Hint - Alfonso Cuaron would be surprised to see the brilliance !! The location was very much a character and the camera explored it with haunting finesse. Editing was bang on. Despite the necessary slow pace, the horses for courses style of editing always kept us inside the framework of the characters world. Music was terrific. Very southern, earthy and it spelt out the situations with elan. One of the brilliant things about the first season was the cohesiveness that it provided, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Cary Fukunaga directed all 8 episodes. I would call it a genre bender. The series takes a familiar world of goth, horror and suspense and then over doses it with emotions and questions of life to the point that the suspense ends up taking the back seat, and the characters end up coming to the fore in all their troubled glory !! I keep mentioning it repeatedly because this is something that I want future viewers to keep in mind. If you do, True Detective is something that will make you ruminate on it for ages. Nic Pizzolatto, Cary Fukunaga, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, take a bow !! And thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me 8 of the best Sundays of my life. Do I even have to mention a rating ?? 10 out of 10 Dummies !! :) :)
