Rise of Smriti Irani: Journey from Bahu of TV serials to Smriti Irani as HRD Minister: ----------------------------------------------------------- The start to Smriti Iranis story wasnt quite this rosy. Born to a cross-cultural family, Smriti Malhotra Irani had seen all stages of life. From a stage where she needed to work as a helper at popular fast food giant, Mcdonalds, her days as the Miss India finalist, her on-screen rendezvous, her being sworn in as the National Vice president for a leading political party, the woman did come a long way. Smriti was born in Delhi. She is one quarter Punjabi, Maharastrian, Bengali and Assamese respectively and the eldest amongst three sisters. She has been a part of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from childhood as her grandfather was an RSS swayamsevak and her mother a member of Jana Sangh. Her entry into the mega production of serials wasnt an easy deal. No one in the production team wanted her, but the producers faith is what kept her ticking. Her role was pivotal to the channel and continued to garner views. It was not long before she became a recognised brand- A brand emulating the ideal image of a doting mother, an obedient daughter-in-law and a loving wife. All through her childhood days, she knew she had to support her family. Her ambitions of becoming a journalist were shattered when a news channel she interviewed for rejected her. Her path to stardom started soon afterwards. Irani joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003. She became vice-president of the Maharashtra Youth Wing in 2004. In the 2004 general elections for the 14th Lok Sabha, she contested unsuccessfully against Kapil Sibal from the Chandni Chowk constituency in Delhi. She was nominated as executive member of the central committee of the BJP.In May 2009, Irani while campaigning for Vijay Goels candidature in New Delhi, voiced her concerns about the safety of women in the capital. She advocated capital punishment for rapists as a deterrent. In early 2010, Irani was appointed as the National Secretary of BJP and on 24 June, she was appointed as All India President of the BJPs womens wing, BJP Mahila Morcha. In August 2011, she was sworn in as a member of parliament from Gujarat to the Rajya Sabha. Smriti Irani shouts Pakistan murdabad in Rajya Sabha, which made her very famous in the Pakistan Medias and news papers. Smriti Irani said her name in the Rajya Sabha bulletin for violation of rules was like a badge of honour. They can kill our soldiers, we cant even raise slogans. Those who insult Vandemataram are not guilty. WOW In the ... house, I raised a slogan saying Pakistan murdabad, Irani said. If that is a violation of etiquette, I take it as a badge of honour, she said. Narendra Modi has firm faith in Smriti who he considers as his sister. Smriti Irani has proved to him that she is not just the perfect ‘mother and bahu’ of Hindi Television serials.as picked up by Modi, Irani contested the 2014 general elections against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi held the seat with a reduced margin of victory of 107,923 compared to 370,194 votes in the previous 2009 election. On 26 May 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed her as the Minister of Human Resource Development in his cabinet. At 38, she is the youngest member of the cabinet.
