River City News Network Daily Report for Tuesday, August 5, 2014 *Fish Virus Detected in Ohio River *Peoples Expands *AG Explains Spoofing *Cold Cambridge Case on TNT Wildlife experts say a virus is present in the Ohio River, but so far there have been no fish kills reported in West Virginia. The Largemouth Bass Virus can be found in North Bend Lake and the Ohio River. It is a naturally occurring virus that usually flares up during hotter months. Signs are posted at North Bend warning anglers to take precautions to keep the virus from spreading. (News and Sentinel) Peoples Bancorp is expanding its operations into Southwest Ohio with the acquisition of NB&T Financial Group, Inc., the parent company of Wilmington, Ohio based National Bank and Trust Company. Founded in 1859, NB&T operates 22 branches in southwest Ohio with approximately $652 million in total assets. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2014. (River City News, PR Newswire) Scammers have a new tool. It is called “spoofing” and Ohio’s attorney general is warning residents to guard against the annoying practice. It happens when the number on caller ID appears to be your own or very similar. Con artists use the tactic to make scams seem convincing. AG Mike DeWine is urging phone users to hang up or not answer suspicious calls. (WOUB, AP) Authorities in Gallia County are releasing information about the July arrest of three individuals on drug trafficking charges following a six-month investigation. Local and state authorities worked with the DEA to raid the Green Township home last month. A search turned up heroin, crack, pot, and nearly $1,500 in cash. 36 year old Earnest Moore III, 31 year old Brandon McNair of Columbus, and Rasheed Lathem of Detroit were taken into custody. (WSAZ) A nursing home in The Plains is asking a judge to put his ruling on hold while they appeal the lawsuit to the 4th District Court of Appeals. Hickory Creek Nursing Center is being sued by a former resident who claims the home was negligent in caring for him. The home denied the allegations and claimed that the former resident could not sue because of an arbitration agreement. A local judge cleared the way for the lawsuit to proceed by refusing the home’s demand for arbitration. (Athens Messenger, WOUB) An episode of Cold Justice on TNT last week explored the unsolved murder case of a Cambridge, Ohio teen. Robin Stone went missing on August 2, 1991. Her remains were found four months later, but the case went cold for lack of evidence.
