Rivers Guber Race: Wike Not Our Sole Candidate – PDP — March 31, 2014 The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has denied reports in some quarters that it has adopted the supervising minister of education, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike as its sole gubernatorial candidate for the 2015 general election in the state. The party accused members of the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the speculations that it has settled for Wike, who incidentally comes from the same Ikwerre ethnic nationality with the incumbent governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. In a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, and signed by Jerry Needam, media aide to the state chairman of the party, PDP stated that it has not and cannot shut its doors to any bona fide member of the party aspiring to the office of the governor of the state. The statement said as an institution founded on democratic principles, the PDP believes that it is not only imperative but also expedient to allow all qualified and interested aspirants for the office of governor to enter for the primary election through which a candidate will emerge before being endorsed by the party. It said the party also believes that those behind the alleged endorsement of Wike as the sole gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the state were on a mission to cause disaffection in the party, saying such persons have nothing to do but to meddle in the internal affairs of the party. The statement said, “The PDP is, therefore, warning such APC detractors and political jobbers to desist from poke-nosing into its internal affairs, while advising all party members to remain loyal and steadfast in their faith in the party, reassuring them of equity, fairness and due process in arriving at all party decisions including the choice of a guber candidate for the party.” Leadership.
