Riverside Police Departments K9 Unit: The Riverside Police Departments K9 unit is comprised of 6 Canines who have all been bought by donated public funds. K9s team has been currently training at the former YMCA Facility on Jefferson which has been graciously loaned to them for their 40+ hours of monthly training above and beyond their normal work load. Throughout the years the K9 Unit has trained at facilities that have been made available by the publics help, whether it be a vacant apartment building, industrial or commercial building. The K9 Unit graciously allowed a few of us to observe the training and boy is it a show to watch! The 6 Canines and their Handlers planned out real life scenarios such as a Suspect hiding in a kitchen, behind a wall, a felony GTA stop with the suspect running as well as barricading himself inside of the car, an article retrieval and even a foot pursuit of a suspect. The constant training is a must to keep both Canines and the Handler on their toes, as well as to continue be the best of the best at catching the bad guys, and well, the occasional Chomp Chomp! lol :o) One of the most important and much needed safety equipment for the Canines are Ballistic Vests, these have also been bought with public donated funds. Currently 4 out of the 6 Canines have these life saving protective vests and need 2 more... The Ballistic Vests help protect the dogs vital organs from being shot, stabbed and punctured, they are truly needed. Currently the K9 Unit is looking for more facilities in Riverside to conduct their training, so if anyone has some connections to a great facility and would be willing to loan it out once a week or even once a month it would be greatly appreciated. Moving Forward here is what we as a community and Group can do to come together for the K9 unit, the Canines and their Handlers. If anyone has a connection or owns a business or large type building for future training, that would be fantastic! Also, if anyone at all has a desire to help the last 2 Officer K9s get their much needed Ballistic Vests to continue apprehending bad people safely, that would be Awesome too!!! We are going to make this happen for out beloved K9s and for their continued success and safety, Keep up the great work out there K9 Unit!!! Oh, and... CHOMP CHOMP!!! ;o)
