Road Construction Projections Update as of 6/18/14 1. Ridgecrest Blvd. Project, Roadway Construction Mahan to Downs Ridgecrest Blvd. is still closed to through traffic between Mahan and Downs. Businesses, patrons and local traffic are permitted within the construction zone. Business driveways in this reach have been ramped over with soil over the top of the new curb, gutter until concrete has cured to full strength. Construction activities include, SCE pole relocations, roadway grading at side street intersections, concrete work for cross gutters at side streets. Next week the concrete cross gutters crossing Downs will begin construction. There will be ½ street lane closures of Downs for the cross gutter construction. Motorists are required to keep speed below 25 mph and be cautious in the “Cone Zone”. Roadway Construction Downs to Norma Roadway construction in this reach will begin Thursday, June 19 with removals of concrete curb, gutter and sidewalk in various locations. Asphalt grinding will start Friday, June 20th and will continue into next week. Business driveways will remain open with temporary earthen ramps into the property. Ridgecrest Blvd. will remain open to businesses, patrons and local traffic. A detour will be set up to redirect through traffic around the construction zone. Multiple changeable message boards will be placed on Downs, Norma and on Ridgecrest Blvd. to alert traffic to road way construction and to announce that businesses are open. Flagmen will also be present at Downs and Norma to assist and direct traffic through the construction zone. Delineation cones and candle sticks will be installed in the construction zone to allow traffic a path of travel through the construction zone. Delineation cones and candle sticks will also be used to mark utility hazards in the construction zone. Motorists are required to keep speed below 25 mph and be cautious in the “Cone Zone”. Utility Relocation Indian Wells Valley Water District has completed the tie in connections of the new 12-inch water line between Downs and Norma. The Water District has begun the transfer of customer water service lines this week. The Water District will then begin the removal of old asbestos cement and old steel water lines in this reach. Following the removal of old lines; fire hydrants will be reconnected to the new 12-inch water line. Expect traffic delays in the reach between Downs and Norma during this week and next week due to the water district work, concrete removals and the asphalt grinding. Future Street Detours As previously indicated; it is anticipated that the next segment of Ridgecrest Blvd. between Downs and Norma will be detoured beginning Thursday, June 19th. All businesses will be open with patrons and local traffic permitted within this reach. All driveway accesses to businesses will remain open to traffic. Construction activities will be the removal of asphalt and electrical conduit installation for interconnection of traffic signals between Downs and Norma. Short delays of access to driveways will be experienced during the asphalt removals and conduit trenching. As indicated above IWVWD will also be removing water lines and transferring customer water services. This will be a very busy reach for construction traffic and excavations. Some of the utilities will be exposed above grade and will be delineated with cones and candle sticks. Local’s patrons and business traffic are asked to be very aware in the cone zone. Depending upon unforeseen conditions, conflicts and utility coordination the term of the road way detour is undetermined at this time. 2. South Sunland Street Construction on South Sunland Street between Ridgecrest Blvd. and Upjohn will begin on Wednesday, June 19th. The contractor, Griffith Construction, has notified residents in advance of their construction activities. Additional information on lane closures and traffic handling will be made available as we approach the construction start date. 3. Upjohn & China Lake Traffic Signal Major concrete work has been completed. The signal poles have been delivered to the site. The signals and light poles are scheduled to be operational by mid-July. The intersection will be very congested with construction equipment and laborers while the traffic signal poles and street lights are being erected. Motorists are asked to be very cautious in this construction zone. 4. Street Striping and Markings The street markings at intersections have been completed. High wind events this week have delayed the ability to conduct the street striping. Wind, weather and available resources permitting; city crews are scheduled to finish the street striping this week. The order of operation will be Norma, Drummond and Downs. Motorists are asked to be cautious in the areas of street striping and markings.
