Road Gig Memories (In The Beginning! My 10 second career as a church solo singer) Back in 1969 I was a teenage kid just beginning to learn how to play drums (starting with the bongo drums) and my first gig was many months away! I was trying hard to find an outlet to play my bongos so my mother suggested that I should play at Valley View Presbyterian church with the youth group. I said, okay mom and proceeded to ask their youth leader in church to which he said,OH NO!! Drums are The Devils instrument! What else can you do? I said, well my mom says I have a good voice for singing but I dont think so! He said, well see sometime soon. So one Sunday the church was having a service celebrating its youth group and the head pastor had the bright idea to have each one of the kids to come up and sing a solo of their favourite song! Well there were 15 of us and so you got to hear 14 very nervous versions Jesus Loves Me This I Know! For The Bible Tells Me So or some church hymn they were familiar with. Finally when it was my turn to get up to sing I said to the congregation, okay, well heres my favourite song and its by Mr.Johnny Taylor! I started singing,♫ Whos Making Love To Your Old Lady? While You Were Out Making Love! ♫ I never before heard a congregation GASP so loudly and seen a 60-70 year old pastor run across the sanctuary so fast to take the microphone away from me! The pastor shouted, OH NO DERRICK!! WE DONT SING THAT KIND OF MUSIC IN CHURCH!! THATS THE DEVILS MUSIC!! I could see my mother sinking down in her pew and hear the youth group snickering! Then I asked the pastor,Well, do you wanna hear Cloud Nine by The Temptations? After I got home my mother said, Boy! YOU are never going to listen to Soul music ever again! That day began my love affair with Rock music!
