Road-widening project:‘Illegal shops coming up to claim govt compensation’ Srinagar, Aug 8, CNS: With the ambitious road-widening project in offing from Rainawari to Saidakadal in Srinagar city, the ‘illegal and temporary’ shops are coming up in haphazard manner on the roadsides to have a claim on the government compensation. Locals alleged that such constructions are coming up with the consent of the officials of Road and Buildings Department. “We have reports and proof how R&B officials are encouraging these people to come up with illegal structures to get a share from them after they (encroachers) receive compensation from the government,” they told CNS. The locals said that for each construction government has decided to pay Rs 10 lakhs to the owner and in a bid to lay hands on government compensation, “some people have started raising illegal shops right from Rainawari to Saidakadal,” they said and demanded immediate halt to these constructions. Refuting these allegation, an R&B official said that only those people are entitled for government compensation whose names figure in survey conducted by government during the time of initiative. He added that there is no nexus between R&B and these people and it is the job of other agencies to dismantle the illegal constructions. (CNS)
