Roads, rail, air: transport is key to prosperity Transport networks drive economic growth. But is it possible to have it all in South Africa – world class transport and environmental sustainability? That’s what will come under the spotlight at the 32nd Annual Southern African Transport Conference (SATC 2013), South Africa’s premier and longest running transport conference, from 8-11 July in Pretoria. Topics include traffic management, safety and security, urban policy and planning, infrastructure and rural vs urban transport. Anyone who’s travelled outside South Africa’s major cities will know that there are glaring inequities here. While urban networks get a good deal of attention and are often in fairly good shape, many of the country’s rural roads are in a parlous state, while there are issues around rail and bus services linking far-flung areas which need to be addressed. Is the rural transport network as critical to South Africa’s future as the N3 linking Durban and Gauteng, or Johannesburg’s ring road? If we want a country with a sustainable future, a country in which inequality is reduced and more people are working, the answer is surely yes. While half of us live in towns and cities, more than 70% of South Africa’s poorest people still live in the rural areas, and there, reliable transport is a life and death matter.
