Roads, trains, and bridges. 12/12/14 A week ago I watched an episode of 60 minutes. It showed how dilapidated our transportation infrastructure. What surprised me is that I remember in the first term of President Obama, he spent $800 billion for shovel ready infrastructure projects. Of course the obvious question is, Where did it go? But the next question is, How do we fix it? A lot of things can be skipped, these cant. We have had bridges collapse, interstate overpasses crumble, and rail cars derailed. How do we fix these problems? It certainly isnt raising income taxes. That would never pass the new Congress, and it is the least efficient means of dealing with the issues. No, but revenue has to come from somewhere other than the Chinese. What I suggest is an increase in the user fee. How do you do that? You increase the fuel tax. Where I live, gas prices have dropped to $2.13/gallon. If we added $0.50 per gallon, we would still remain below $3/gal. The bill could be written so that, in the event prices went over $3 again, the tax would be decreased by 25 cents. This produces revenue for repairs, while gas is cheap enough for us to afford the extra cost. Unlike other funds, these are devoted to the use of Transportation Department for repairs. This places the cost on those who use the roads, bridges, and rails. I ask for feedback and suggestions from my friends.
