Rob Ford reminds me of Matt Lucas comic character of Vicky Pollard. She seems completely lacking, but turns her inability to stay on topic to disarm anyone who would make her accountable for her bad behaviour. Ford and Vicky both freely use fraudulent outrage to change the subject. In a way we take delight in Vickys ability to confound authority figures while doing whatever she likes. In a way I admire Ford for being able to tap into the resentment of the suburbs to beat everyone, including his supposed friends, into submission. It has a certain brutal efficiency. Too bad that seems unable to make any substantial contribution to the city. Well be spending decades sorting out what he actually accomplished from his BS. That Matt Lucas is overweight and his character is lower class does not diminish the power of Vicky Pollard as we love to hate such people and both Vicky and Rob Ford exploit our moral weakness to the hilt, by goading us and then shaming us. Or attempting to shame us even when we refuse to be goaded. As we know, bullies like Vicky inevitably end up alone, starved of the lackeys that give her power. Similarly, people like Giorgio Mammoliti are just figuring out that Ford is not their friend and they need to walk away.
