Robbie Burns was born in Alloway, Ayrshire in 1759, when the sentiments of the 1745 Jacobite Uprising were still very much in evidence. The haunting image of an old man, tending to the graves of his seven fallen sons, lends this song very powerful imagery. Jamie is of course James VIII.
