Robbo: I have watched what Louis van Gaal is doing and I feel we are improving. Despite having the same points tally, I think we have improved from where we were last year. I don’t think we can win the title. I don’t think we are there yet. Chelsea are far too strong. Jose Mourinho knows what it is all about. City have had their group of players together longer than we’ve had ours. We have got to be better than Southampton, we have got to be better than Arsenal and Tottenham because if we are better than them, then we will finish third. If we finish third this season then that will be great. That is still the aim. The Southampton defeat on Sunday was a setback but we have to go on another 10-match unbeaten run. If we do that we will be right in there.“We have to make sure we are in the Champions League again and if we do that then it will have been a great season.” “Louis van Gaal’s signings have definitely improved us. You may say that with the money spent, it should do, but you look at Liverpool. They spent £100m last summer but haven’t improved one bit. They have gone backwards. That is one of the main things to get right when you are a manager. You have to make sure your signings improve your squad and your team and Louis van Gaal is doing that...One of Sir Alex’s main assets was his ability to pick out a player. He bought strong characters - his buys were brilliant. They made us successful. In the dressing room then there was a sense of growing excitement as more and more new signings were made. It was difficult at the start but they were a good group who you knew would grow. After that big summer of buying the next phase saw lads come in ones and twos and all the time the squad was growing and developing. It is very similar now to the late 80s. I went to watch training at Carrington last Friday and I thought to myself ‘wow that really looks a good group of players now’. The manager might not make any signings in January because there may not be players who can improve us, but in the summer, if he buys players who can help us get better, then it might be like when people like Peter Schmeichel came in and then Eric Cantona. They were the last pieces in the jigsaw that made us better. He’s done the first bit bringing in a lot of players last summer and I like the character of the players he has brought in. They are making us better and then, in the summer, you might see some more as Van Gaal fine tunes things. I can definitely see that happening. We are not too far behind Chelsea and City now and United are only going to get better.”
