Robert Burns is one of our greatest poets, Burns Night on Saturday - TopicsExpress

Robert Burns is one of our greatest poets, Burns Night on Saturday 25th January 2014 is the time when the World goes Scottish and commemorates his works and inspiration. But who is he? Even friends of mine deny knowledge of him, but he brought us Auld Lang Syne which is one of the three most popular songs ever, recited by millions on New Years Eve. He was born on 25 January 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire to a tenant farmer who faced hard times, living and working in Scotland he fathered 12 children during his brief 37 years of life and died on 21 July 1796. His poetry is written in Scottish dialect so best recited by native Scots, but the raw beauty and romanticism is stirring which is probably why its so enduring. With Valentines Day just around the corner one of his most romantic poems is often quoted without knowing the source, as he wrote the line my love is like a red, red rose : A Red Red Rose by Robert Burns My love is like a red, red rose That’s newly sprung in June : My love is like the melody That’s sweetly played in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in love am I : And I will love thee still, my dear, Till a’ the seas gang dry. Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun : And I will love thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only love, And fare thee weel a while ! And I will come again, my love, Thou’ it were ten thousand mile So get your haggis, neeps and tatties ready for Saturday, invite your friends and loved ones and celebrate Burns Night. We dont have loads of costumes, tam-o-shanter hats, banners, napkins, decorations left in store, but we do still have SOME so pop down to decorate your home ready for a fun night of laughter, music, poetry, good food and possibly just a little bit of a Highland dram
