Robert Reich We’re in a perfect storm: (1) a record level of inequality, with more of the nation’s income and wealth going to a small group at the top than ever; (2) an unprecedented amount of money from the super-rich flowing into politics, buying politicians and selling lies to the public directly; and (3) secrecy about where the money is coming from. The result is the emergence of organizations like the Club for Growth – a political front whose funds almost certainly come from right-wing billionaires such as the Koch brothers – that are now bankrolling ultra-right candidates in Republican primaries. This, more than anything else, is moving the GOP toward extremists who want to take down the entire U.S. government if they don’t get their way. As I noted yesterday, a government shutdown might help Democrats in 2014. But unless we begin tackling the basics – the scourge of record inequality, unprecedented big money in politics, and secrecy about the sources of it – over the next few years our democracy and our society are imperiled.
