Robert Reich shares ~ The biggest political question faced by any society is whether we’re all in it together, or each is on our own. As I’ve traveled around America in 2014 I’ve been struck by how many people express a sense of being isolated and disconnected from the rest of America. Yet surely the strength of a society depends on its cohesion and social solidarity, on the bonds of mutual responsibility that define it as a society in the first place. For three decades after World War II, after fighting and winning the struggle against fascism, we felt those bonds so strongly we enacted civil rights and voting rights laws, Medicare and Medicaid, expanded free higher education, built the interstate highway system, and enacted the Environmental Protection Act. The richest among us paid a marginal income tax that was never below 70 percent (91 percent under Eisenhower). And then, starting with Ronald Reagan’s administration, we began moving in the opposite direction. Why?
