Robert has never played organized sports because he gets - TopicsExpress

Robert has never played organized sports because he gets overwhelmed and then has autistic meltdowns. Its frustrating to me because he is a really good athlete and as strong as an ox; moreover, he has the best work ethic of any youth around. 3 days ago I bought him a new glove and taught him to pitch. I was able to teach it to him by numbers. Zero on the rubber; one starts his stretch; two he pivots his foot; three he starts his kick; and on four he just brings it! Leigh Anne and I couldnt believe it -- he has a cannon attached to him! Several times I just stood there in awe and unable to speak; I just laughed. Its really cute to hear him count through the process. Spawned by fatherly excitement, I bought him a pitching net with a target that trampolines the ball back to him. He cant get enough! Hes on the side of our house first thing in the morning tirelessly throwing at that target. I think we may have found his thing. He has a great little wind up and he throws it as hard as a 13 year old -- hes 9. Its interesting to note that in 3 days that his meltdowns have subsided and our relationship has improved three-fold. Its also interesting to note that my mens group has prayed incessantly for Robert and his meltdowns ... and my patience with them. Its obvious to me that he aims to please me with each pitch and Ive been able to discuss pitching with him when he begins to meltdown. Who would have thought it would have been baseball? God indeed works in mysterious ways! I leave you with this narrative from the movie FIELD OF DREAMS: But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: its part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that was once good and could be good again. Oh, people will come Ray ... people will definitely come. Maybe with work, people will come to watch my son, Robert. That would be the most satisfied day of my life. I will keep you updated on his success.
