Robin Williams Written by: Camy Schwam-Wilcox of Schwam-Wilcox & Associates cbswlaw I know there has been some controversy about the media coverage this tragedy of Robin Williams suicide has been getting; however, it is a very important and serious issue. Yes, there are other issues in the world right now like war, human trafficking in our backyard here in Orlando, a high murder rate, and the homelessness epidemic, especially on how it has increased for children….these are all important issues and discussing Robin Williams does not minimize those other tragedies; however, unfortunately it takes a famous person’s problems to be made public to raise awareness of a very severe problem our citizens are facing in Central Florida as well: Depression. Depression is a diagnosis that is hard to understand… how can a person who appears to have the world at his feet want to end his life? It is a question that no one can answer, but affects more people than you know. I lost my nephew to suicide and I think about the pain he was feeling without me even having a slight clue. When I saw him the night before he took his life he looked happy and excited to start his new job as a dealer on a cruise ship, and instead of sailing away to a new life experience he shot himself. Maybe Robin Williams death will help us to be more cognizant of the pain people are going through around us, a smile on the outside does not mean all is well on the inside. Take the time to listen to people, maybe in their own way they are crying out for help, let’s slow down and understand that depression is a real epidemic and sometimes even the victims of this diagnosis do not know…Each February my family participates in the Out of the Darkness Walk to honor those who have taken their lives and we hope that it raises awareness for others that are suffering… it is astounding when you see all of the angelic faces of those lost loved ones on the t-shirts of the walkers. We are fortunate in the Family Law Community to have so many wonderful mental health professional contacts… if you or a loved one needs help, reach out now…
