Robin Williams children have been brutally attacked on social media since his death. So much that theyve had to shut down their social media accounts, and are now severely depressed. This happens just days after their dad killed himself. ...because he was depressed. Ive personally known members of the steampunk and other communities whove killed themselves over on line bullying and drama, or given up very successful careers. Its not my place to tell you who, but its a long list, and youd recognize every name on it. I know many others that you are fans of who are close to giving up as well. Now, here is a brutal confession thats relevant: Ive been severely angry and depressed for months, because of shitty people saying shitty things to me, online, several times a day. Dont let it get to you is about the most useless advice ever, when you are taking about the frequency and brutality of these online attacks. Thats the price of fame others say smugly, as if they feel death is a fair price to pay. My own mother, two days ago told me that often she cant sleep at night, because shes so angry about something some one said to me online. I delete the really bad stuff, she only sees what I am fine with. But I have to see it all. Meanwhile, many concert promoters and talent buyers hire artists based solely the success of your social networking, so musicians and actors cant give it up, and must remain bullied and abused. (Weve actually been turned down for shows, and other bands hired in our stead, because even though far less people come to those other bands concerts, our social media had slightly less numbers the day that promoter checked.) Social networks are bad for mankind, but no one seems to be able to give them up. Here is my theory: social networks give voices to all of mankind. And what that has taught us is that enough of mankind sucks that hearing all of mankind makes your life miserable. ...and so I sit here with this blog written, terrified to hit post, for fear of the trolls I know will emerge.
