Robin Williams death is a very tragic loss. This always inspiring actor, brings many thoughts to my mind. It takes me back to a night that I could call one of the fondest memories I had with my Dad. It was August 8 1988 and I took the train to meet my Dad in the city. We lived in Brooklyn so it was normal to take the subway at 13 years old. My Dad and I had plans for dinner and to see Dead Poets Society. The most extraordinary part of the night was when my Dad asked me to take a quick stop into Balduccis, an upscale grocery store. He said Well probably run into someone famous, lets take a few minutes and give it a go. The rebellious Guns and Roses obsessed teenager that I was, I said why bother the only person Id ever want to meet is Axl Rose. Believe it or not, Axle Rose was there. That was the kind of magical night it was. All giddy and skipping around, I didnt even think I could make it to the movie. We loved the movie and looking back there were so many great lessons in that movie. Even as a 13 year old, I think I was able to tap into the importance of these lessons. They were the lessons that my Dad always instilled in me. To never conform. To stand up for what is right. Carpe diem, to always live in the moment. To embrace your uniqueness. Dont be someone you are not just to fit in.To conquer your fears. Robin Williams was an outstanding teacher and he gifted those boys with something they would have never experienced. My Dad has been gone 4 months today and it feels good to remember this magical evening.
