Robin Williams died today. The cause, apparently, was suicide due to a long battle with depression. He was a comedian, so well start this off with a joke. A man goes to see a doctor and says: Doctor, Im depressed, life is harsh and cruel, I feel all alone in the world. The doctor replies, Dont worry son, the treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town. Go see him. That should pick you up. The man bursts into tears. But doctor, he says, I am Pagliacci. Suicide is always a tragedy, but when the person in question is a great comedian, it seems like that tragedy becomes even larger. We depend on comedians to paint our worries and fears in a way that allows us to laugh at them, and through that laughter, they give us the strength we need to face down those fears no matter how large they might seem. Even in the darkest of times, it is the comedians that shine the glimmer of light through which the sun can rise again. However, we often forget that the only person in the room who does not have that light for comfort is the comedian themselves. Robin Williams did not have Robin Williams to cheer him up, and it is this fact that makes the best comedians true heroes of our age, as they face the abyss alone, and no amount of applause or adulation ever truly serves to cancel out the isolation they feel. Things have been very dark in the world of late, but they seem a little darker now that one of our brightest lights are dead. However, Robin Williams left behind a legacy that will continue shining forward into the future, giving us laughter and hope for many years to come. Thank you, oh comedian, my comedian, and may you finally rest in peace.
