Robin Williams suicide has brought up a lot of discussion about depression. Depression isnt like epilepsy where it can strike at any time, then suddenly, without warning you go dark. Robin Williams was having financial difficulties and just lost a sitcom. It was probably his first failure since Popeye. There was a trigger in his environment, and not some mysterious monster that came out of nowhere. You cant have the master craftsman comedian/actor without the manic depressive who beats the shit out of him/herself whenever theres a setback or failure. In order to make it, he had to ignore critics, so it only follows logic that he would also ignore compliments and encouragement. Hes the only one who ever knew who he really was. Im sure there was no talking to him. Im sure he heard it all before and even said it all before. The only person who couldve stopped him was himself. I think about the moment between committing to hanging himself and his actual death. Those few seconds stretched out to minutes where his instincts kicked in and he knew he made a mistake, but couldnt do anything about it. I think about him wishing, in those last panic moments, that someone would find him and save him as he started to black out. I think thats what happened. Its sad. I thought he was stronger than that.
