Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thought (had this conversation with a co-worker today): Nirvana has been nominated this year. Guns n Roses got in. Both bands had landmark albums that sold millions but did not sustain any long-term pop success (one because of a suicide and one because the band imploded). But because of their debut records, many recognize these bands as changing the face of music when they came out and influencing countless others despite fading into the woodwork fairly quickly and therefore they are considered Hall of Fame worthy. Based on that criteria, why shouldnt The Knack be nominated? Yes, you all know I am a die-hard fan of theirs but think of this objectively: They arrived on the scene in 1979 when disco was at its popular apex. They changed the scene by igniting power pop/new wave and paving the way for countless bands that followed them. They sold millions of records and had the only rock single to be a #1 hit of the year in any year of the 70s. The members were uber-talented and worked with innumerable music legends from Springsteen to Manzarek to Ringo and were even produced by the legendary Jack Douglas. Plus, Kurt Cobain publicly credited them as an influence. It could be said that The Knack ushered in the 80s the way Nirvana ushered in the 90s. If Nirvana and GnR are worth the Hall of Fame bid, then I say consider The Knack. My thoughts...for what theyre worth.
