The two were actually recorded the same month, April 1963, and at the same studio in Portland, Oregon, and were competing to be the hit version. The Raiders missed out on that round but more than made up for it a few years later with their string of hits including back to back releases of Kicks and Hungry, both essential songs to learn for any self respecting garage band in 1966.
