Rocksteady 200 50. The Russians Are Coming – Val Bennett - TopicsExpress

Rocksteady 200 50. The Russians Are Coming – Val Bennett (Lee’s) 1968 One of the greatest ever rocksteady instrumentals. The Russians Are Coming started life as the Jazz instrumental hit Take 5 by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, first recorded in 1959. I know the Dave Brubeck version has gone down in history as one of the greatest instrumentals of all time but I really do think this is a case where the cover out scores the original. The name change was presumably inspired by the 1966 comedy film The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming. It was originally issued as a 7” single in Jamaica on Lee’s and was released in the UK on Island records. This is probably tenor saxophonist Val Bennett’s finest moment. Bennett was already something of a veteran, having started his career in the 1940’s when he led his own band The Val Bennett Orchestra. He went on to play a prominent part in the success of Prince Buster, being a regular member of his backing band on a whole batch of tracks including Al Capone.
